I’m drawn between two extremes; the clean and the distressed. This concept can be found all around us. Take for example a freshly painted outdoor surface and one that has weathered over time. I work within these extremes to one degree or another. I enjoy the struggle of finding a balance between a minimal clean surface and one that shows signs of wear and tear. Other extremes like industry and nature, synthetic and organic, big and small or rough and smooth all play a roll in the aesthetic value I place in my artwork.
In my current series, canvas has given way to cardboard and oils to household latex paints. I laminate multiple layers of cardboard into block-like shapes. As I paint on layer after layer I mold and sculpt the block with my hands, a power sander, a hammer or other tools leaving behind an irregular shape and surface. Within each layer I work in paint and tape to develop the composition. I like the finished result to contain a strong balance of color and geometry. My goal has been to create objects where “less is more” using a process that allows me to experience “more” without losing the “less”. |
